Good road network among reasons why public not using train service - Lajim
Bernama (21/5/08): Increasingly systematic public transport operations and good road network are among reasons why the train service is not very popular with the people, the Dewan Rakyat was told Wednesday.
This had caused Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to suffer millions of ringgit in losses every year, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin said.
He said the ministry was taking steps to improve the rail service by replacing old locomotives and coaches.
"Now we have very good roads to reach our destination though we have to pay toll, that's why KTMB is incurring losses," he said when replying to Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar (PAS-Tumpat) during question time.
KTMB's losses last year were RM116 million, RM104 million in 2006 and RM131 million in 2005, Lajim said.
He said the ministry would discuss with KTMB management on the services provided for the people's comfort.
