SMS on 16 Sabah MPs defecting baseless: Shafie
Daily Express (13/5/08): Semporna MP Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal denied a message being circulated through the short messaging service (SMS) on party hopping by Barisan Nasional (BN) elected representatives in Sabah.
"The message is not true. What form of guarantee can they get if they are to hop to another party.
"The BN has existed for a long time as a result of the collaboration of all races, unlike the opposition pact which is a merger of PAS, Parti Keadilan Rakyat and the DAP," Shafie told reporters after a visit to the Istana Budaya here.
He was reacting to a statement by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamad Nazri Aziz, who claimed that he had received a SMS which said that 16 elected representatives from Sabah Umno would leave the party on Wednesday.
Shafie advised the people not to believe the message.
Earlier, Shafie, who is also Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister, said the Istana Budaya served as a platform for the spread and development of the local culture and arts internationally.
"Hence, the need for the Istana Budaya to be creative in selecting works, which contain traditional and modern elements, for its public performance, especially to attract the young generation, and to instil in them, love for local arts and culture," he added.
CM: Ignore rumours and get to work
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman wants the people to stop listening or spreading rumours about Sabah members of Parliament (MPs) who might switch party.
Instead, Musa said the people, especially the MPs and state assemblymen, should focus on giving their best to serve the people as promised during the March 8 general election.
"I always said that we do not have any plan to switch party. We are still loyal to the Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership. What is important now is to work together to further develop the State and deliver what we have promised to the people.
"Now is the time to work. Do not speak about party hopping. No such thing," he told reporters after chairing a Cabinet meeting, Monday.
Musa was asked on the rumour that 16 Sabah MPs were purportedly thinking of defecting.
About the Kalabakan MP, Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh's speech in Parliament, Musa said what was voiced out represented the voice of the majority of Sabah people.
However, he said, the issues had been forwarded to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and was being given serious attention.
According to Musa, what was important now was that the Federal government leadership had listened and tried to accommodate Sabah's needs.
